Stevenage and District Motorcycle Club

The Club Committee

( And Honorary Members )

Here is a photo, and a little bit about, your hardworking committee.

Seek them out for a chat, or to answer any questions about the Club, at Club Nights or on Ride Outs.

Pat Barrett

Club President

Pat, one of our oldest members aged 72, is not a born again biker as he has been riding continuously since he was 16, (that's why he looks so tired)

He has covered over 450,000 miles during this time, and has owned a succession of bikes mainly British up to 1974, Norton singles chiefly, then Jap bikes, Honda CB750,Yamaha VX1000 sidecar and Yamaha XJ900 sidecar.

Pat was British sidecar sprint champion in the late fifties, and has attended 52 Isle of Man TT meetings, can anyone else in the club beat that! and saw the first 100mph lap of the TT circuit in 1957.

Pats present bikes are a 1951 James Comet, 1997 Honda C90 and a 1990 Yamaha XJ900 sidecar outfit which he still rides regularly to club meetings.

Tony Brown

Club Chairman

Tony has been our Chairman since 1979 having joined the club in 1963. He has been involved with Motorcycles all his life, being the son of the famous George Brown, to whom our annual memorial run is dedicated.

He has ridden motorbikes and worked in the motorcycle industry since he was a youngster.

Tony has achieved six world speed records, some of which still stand, on the Vincent powered "Super Nero"; but he has slowed down now and is riding an Aprilia Tuono.

Tony's other interest, not so far apart from his main interest, is collecting model motorcycles.

Mike Taylor

Club Secretary

Mike joined the club in 1967 and has been a committee member since the 1980’s.

He started riding in 1957, and has competed in both road racing and trials riding between the late sixties and early eighties.

He rides Aprilias (I expect someone has to) both a Tuareg and a 1000cc Falco.

Mikes other interest, apart from the Club, is flying.

Dave Clements

Regalia Officer

I became a biker when I was 17 (just a short time ago), having decided it was faster and less energetic than using a push bike! I have been riding practically everyday since then, as it is my only form of transport. I am not one of these fair weather or Sunday riders.

I am a very young looking 46 (or so I’m told) and who am I to argue?

I have been in the S&DMCC for over 12 years (longer than Mr Kinch), and have served on the committee for 7 years and as Regalia Office for 4 years

I have a Hinckley Triumph Speed Triple 04, this being my 4th Triumph, I am obviously a total convert, as they are probably the best in the world.

I also have 3 BSA’S, which I restored. In my younger years I did much travelling abroad with these bikes, on various BSA rallies, including the States for a month and Holland.

Dean Webster

Committee Member

Dean has been a club member for two years now, and joined the committee in 2009.

His first bike on road was a Malaguti moped and has been a biker since age of 11 ( A very long time ago ) when he had a James Captain for "Field" use, progressed to Greeves 250ccc Challenge Moto-X, then once on road had  a Triumph Trophy 250cc, several Bonnevillles, Matchless 650cc then several Trial/Trail bikes including Bultaco 250cc, XT500, XL500 and Yamaha XS750, Kawasaki GPZ1000, Harley 1200 Sportster.

But now ride the ultimate Triumph, The 2300cc Rocket III, probably the best motorcycle in the world.

Seen here at the 2008 club picnic at Woburn Park.

Martin Worsley

Committee Member

After a break from biking and the club, I rejoined in 2005, since then I've had a ZZR600 a Bandit 1200 and now ride a BMW R1100GS and have also got a Z650 in a box or two.

I enjoy going to the shows and weekends away that the club arranges and the fact that families are made welcome.

David Kinch & Theresa Kinch

Club Webmaster & Catering and Weekly Raffle

Theresa and I have been a club members since the early 90's, and have served on the committee many times before.

I learnt to ride on old British bikes, in the late 60's and early 70's and now run a Triumph Trophy 1200. Probably the best make of bikes in the world.

We enjoy touring, both in Britain and abroad, and I take part, most years, in the three national rallies, see features page for details.

I am the Club Webmaster; but as this is my first attempt at web design and I had to learn as I went along, any comments or advice are welcome, as are any items for publication.

Theresa looks after the weekly raffle and catering on our club nights.

I have been a T.T. Marshal for thirty years and am married with 4 children, I worked as a tool cutter and grinder in aircraft industry.

Les Ward

Honorary Vice President

I joined the club late in 1963 when the club HQ was at the Man in the Moon in Stevenage. I attended my first Dinner and Dance in 1964 and have been to everyone since!!!.

Within two years of joining , I was elected treasurer, a post I held on and off over the next 40 years, interspersing fiddling the books with a long period as club secretary and as a Committee member .

My first motorised two wheeled vehicle was a Lambretta LD150,a lethal thing with no go and no brakes!! I then bought a 350 Matchless, followed by 2 Triumphs and a Velo Venom on which,in 1969, I completed the National Rally. In those days the rally was 600 miles in 24 hours and with the Velo's seating arrangement I didn't sit down for a week. My next bike was a 750 Norton Commando, one of the first so called 'super bikes'; it used to fall apart on a regular basis. After this I purchased a BSA Rocket 3, another Commando and finally a 750XS Yamaha.

I have always been interested in all aspects of Motorcycling, having followed George Browns sprint successes and various club members to the Isle of Man. I still follow British Super Bikes, Motor GP , and World Super Bikes. I was even seen at Brands Hatch last year watching the British Super Bikes!!

Since retiring from a life of toil in the Engineering industry Irene and I spend about 5 months of the year touring round the UK and the Continent in our Motor home.
